Before you read the rest of this post, let it be known that I adore all things Beyoncé and the Knowles family. That is all.
If you live under a rock and don’t know, let me inform you that Solange Knowles attacked Jay-Z a few weeks ago. The family bonding took place in an elevator, with Yoncé essentially standing still beside her husband as he was attacked by her sister. Solange was eventually restrained by security guards, but she still threw some fierce punches and kicks at Jay.
Not nice, Solange. Really not nice.
I don’t care why they were fighting because that’s not my business. Their private lives are private and they shouldn’t have to explain to us what the brawl was over. If you got in a fight with someone, would you want the world demanding answers from you? Probably not.
Regardless of the fight’s cause, I am still scratching my head over one thing. Why has no one pressed charges against Solange? The obvious answer is that Jay and Bey have chosen not to, as it is their choice whether or not they want to take legal action against Solange. She’s Bey’s sister and Jay’s sister-in-law, so I can’t say that I expected them to take legal action. But as I thought about the fight, I began to wonder why the public reaction to the argument wasn’t stronger. Obviously all of the gossip magazines and TV shows were all over the drama and we, the drama-loving public, were talking about it. When I say public reaction, I mean the response to the female-on-male violence. Solange assaulted Jay-Z, which is not okay by any means. If you ask me, no one should ever turn to violence to settle their problems. When has that ever turned out well?
Lets imagine that Jay-Z attacked Solange in the same manner that she attacked him. Can you even begin to imagine the uproar that that would have caused? Jay-Z would likely have been arrested. It wouldn’t have been considered a casual “family fight” and forgotten after a few weeks time. We would be talking about how violent he is, what a brute he exposed himself as, and all the reasons why he should face prison time and probation and serve community service hours. If the tables were turned, Jay-Z would have been done.
Solange is getting off easy, or at least it appears so. Women attack men everyday and charges are pressed so much less frequently than when men attack women. We’re always talking about the double standards that women face in society, but what about this case? If Jay had done the attacking and no charges were pressed, we would have been asking the following: how can she let him get away with this? Men rarely, if ever, get away with attacking a woman in public without legal consequences. Why isn’t it the same for women attacking men, or at least in this instance?
I don’t know too much about the law, so take this with a grain of salt. But isn’t there something a bit twisted about this that no one is talking about?
